I know this is probably way up the garden path. I checked the timing whilst the engine was running at 1500 rpm idel speed. #1 cylinder and the timing was 180 degrees out. Is this because there was no load on it? Or is it really 180 degrees out. I wouldn't have thought the motor would run with this set up? If so could you point me in the right direction of how to alter the timing???
Thanks
Peter

??????----------Timing on these motors does not go out of adjustment !!---Review the way you are checking the timing too.--180 out it would not run at all !!!

How did you come to the conclusion that the timing was 180 degrees off? Which plug wire did you use with your timing light?

Most of these older crossflows have two timing mark sets on the flywheel. For #1 and #2 cylinders. The thought is that you check both of them and then adjust the highest-reading one to the factory spec. Such as 28 degrees. The high rpm timing must be set at 4500-5000 rpm's. You can't set it properly at idle.

ok thanks but shouldn't the mark be "in the ball park" ????
I know you are also supposed to set it on load and I can't really get past 3000 rpm before she starts backfiring like crazy.
Thanks
Peter
