The 1990-2000 manual says there is a timing adjustment screw, but there is not. Timing is apparently by adjusting the length of one or the other arms that reach to the underside of the flywheel. The flywheel sticker says to time it by setting the roller to just touch the cam, but that is a carb throttle plate adjustment, which does not necessarily change timing. I set the carb throttle roller properly in the usual way. How do I check or set proper timing? There are timing marks on the flywheel, but no pointer on the engine. I assume one uses the starter shaft as the timing indicator mark location?
The engine dies when I try to run it below 2000 rpm. Carb has been cleaned and rebuilt. Engine hard to start, often requires a shot of starting fluid. You crank it without fluid and it almost fires. The bendix drops back down because the engine has fired slightly, but the engine does not keep running. Each cylinder sort of half fires once and quits. Compression is 120, new plugs.
I did find a cut in the fuel line where it attaches to the carb so I replaced that section of fuel line.
The manual says the idle screw should be set at 3/4 turn, and that is what I have determined works best on this engine.
