Mine has the pin.

I suppose the timing marks are on the flywheel.

I am seeing marks but cant read them, I rubbed chalk on them and only a little better.

I think I see a 0, and I think maybe a 10.

I got it at what I think is the 10 and the 0 is above the pin not below it.

Am I close given that what I am seeing it the 10* mark? would the 0 be above the pin vs. below it?

also, at idle my carb sounded like it was sucking a ton of air, so I adjusted the idle mixture screws all the way in then out, split the difference. now the sucking air sound can be heard but not nearly as much. does this sound correct. Would the excess air give a false lean condition during WOT?

Thanks

Not on the flywheel, the timing marks are on the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine.

Sorry that is what I meant to say, am I correct given my discription?

If not how do I clean that up so that I can read the marks?

Thanks for the help.

you can use paint or crayon. Sanding the area down lightly with sandpaper usually helps. When you find the 10* mark(factory setting), you can just paint a line here so when you're timing it you can set it to this mark easily. Good luck.
