Timing and sync. help please.

I have been going Through my manual and searching the forum for hours now and I can't find a ref. to which plug is #1 on my '78 115hp. I thought it was upper left but a pic in the manual shows right bank upper. Also when I was synchronizing the carbs, my lower throttle screw was frozen. I should have checked the manual before doing it but I released the upper screw to let the throttle plates close. Is there a problem? All the points line up and plates in both carbs open at one time. Any help is appreciated.

They are numbered from top to bottom the way they connect to the crank.

Facing from the rear: number 1 is top right; top left is 2; bottom right is 3; bottom left is 4.
