Took the motor out of my boat last week to replace the rear main seal and decided to tear into it a little more since it was already out. Took the front timing chain cover off and discovered that the chain is really loose, like 1/2" of play on one side. I remember somewhere seeing a tensioner kit that you could add, does this provide any benifit and can anyone tell me where I can get this kit if I need it. PN would be helpful. It is a 96 VP 4.3L Vortec Motor. Also, I painted the whole block Volvo red and got a little paint on some of the valve rockers does this paint hurt anything.

If you are describing the maximum travel, i.e. both back and forth, 1/2" is normal and in spec.. If you mean 1/2" on one side and 1/2" on the other (back and then forth) the chain should be replaced. I am assuming that by "one side" you mean the side not under tension and 1/2" is the total it will move back and forth. If so, you're OK. The Volvo manual states:

"If the camshaft timing chain can be moved back and forth in excess of .625in. (16mm), make a note that the camshaft timing chain should be replaced during reassembly"

The tensioner piece you asked about is a plastic piece that was added at some point. Someone here retrofitted one, but it did not make a difference. I'll try to find the thread and edit this if I do.

Edit: Found it. Here's a pic of it:

It was Newport Dave who did it, in this thread

Yes, as Bjcsc sais, the tensioner and new timing chain set did not repair the problem (noise) on the Volvo 4.3 pictured. I never was able to diagnose the problem.

My engine builder recommended the tensioner based on a GM (not Volvo-Penta) service bulletin. I can't find the bulletin but it had a parts list. As I recall the parts were about $250.00
