I am tring to get the timing set on my 1998 90hp rude i am following the directions in the manual and set the fly wheel's TDC mark in line with the timing pointer measure 1 1/2 inches past that put a #1 mark set the piston stop tool then rotated the flywheel until the piston hit the tool made a #2 mark then measured the distance between these marks and made a #3mark in the middle of them this #3 mark landed right on the #18 on the flywheel(the flywheel has a tdc mark then it counts by 2 all the way to 30) the book says if the # 3 mark did not land on the tdc mark the timing is off! and to fix this alling the #3 mark with the timing pointer and hold the fly wheel then slide the timing pointer to alling it with the TDC mark on the fly wheel. My problem it the pointer only moves about half an inch and the #3 mark and the TDC on the fly wheel are about an 1 1/2 apart what the heck is going on? I did this twice to make sure i did it right and came up with the same thing!

Ok, slow down. That doesn't set the timing. What you're trying to do is find top dead center so you can align the pointer. Not adjust the timing. Reread what the manual says and follow it exactly.

Without punctuation your post is really hard to read.
