I just fitted pertronix ignition with flamethrower coil, and in accordance with their instructions i checked the timing,,i found that at 650 rpm it was set at TDC so i adjusted slowly to 5 degrees before TDC,made no difference, by the time i got to 8 degrees before TDC the engine was at 1100 rpm,
So, should i set at 8 degrees before TDC as per the book and adjust tickover speed? why does it increase rpm? what effect does advancing the timing have? will it make any difference to starting? thanks for your time guys,:)

Raisng/advancing timing will raise the idle speed. After getting the prescrib'd degree, then you must reset idle speed, then you must re-check timing, then check idle speed. Till you have it correct. Should be 650 in gear.
