Hello everyone

I'm picking up some tools to add to my collection and wanted your guys opinion about these items. I'm trying to get the best deal possible to save some coin. But if spending 'abit' more to get better quality is needed, let me know.

Is the timing light good for outboards?

Test tachometer

Sorry for repost, this isnt a direct repair problem but I thought that the people in the repair forum would have used this gear before and know the pros and cons.

Thanks,

Re: Timing light and test tach help

Ok, maybe I'm still giddy after my purchase. But I found on ebay a Craftsman professional timing light. This thing is ridiculous. I was using an old snap-on to do my timing and it would every so often fire at the wrong time and you'd have to ignore the occasional incorrect flash...sometimes it wouldn't' flash at all.

The reason I suggest the craftsman professional(or one similar) is:

-I picked it up for $15 (plus $12 shipping)
-It has a tach on the back which is VERY accurate (has a 2/4 cycle pushbutton)
-Can display your timing digitally, for more accurate motor tuning(download the manual to understand what I mean)
-Is ultra sensitive. I was able to set the WOT timing on my 18 merc by pulling the starter line with one hand while checking timing with the other (flashed reliably at 400-550rpm)

So. I'm not a salesperson from Craftsman. But I would strongly recommend looking at that timing light and checking ebay for the same, or comparable light (I saw a few that look identical with the digital display on the back)

Cool find I gotta check it out. Plus it nice to kill two birds with one stone , with the timing light w/tach. Thanks for sharing :). Scanning eBay now. Gonna see if amazon has anything aswell.

Re: Timing light and test tach help

I have every intention of the next time I go out on the boat, I'm gonna bring it with. The tach function is so steady (and assuming accurate) i'm gonna use it to decide if the prop on that motor is best, or if I should change it up a little.
