When setting the timing on my boat I noticed that there seem to be two marks on the harmonic balancer. One of them is a little V groove mark that comes up right in front of the timing marks on the engine and the other is a mark that is just a straight groove on the face of the harmonic balancer.

My question is which one is the correct one to use for setting the timing?

Thanks in advance.

You will have to find TDC to be sure which is the correct one.
But it should be the second one as its rotating.

so I pulled the #1 spark plug and felt for the compression stroke. The little V groove mark seemed to line up best with the timing marks so I used this one to set the timing. Is that correct? Just want to be sure I am using the right one.

I wonder if someone added the "little v groove" on a balancer that has slipped. The "normal" mark is the straight groove across the balancer. At least on the ones I am familiar with.
