I know that there are a thousand posts and info on timing, but I can't find one that that deals with my self inflicted problem. I have a 1968 (2320822) Merc 1000 i6. I ws new to outboards when I got the thing from my father and I began to replace all the coroded wiring. In the process I removed the flywheel by taking off the smal nuts on the top. I didn't put alot of thought into the fact that the timing marks are on it and I know that I put it back together not line up. So here's the question
1. Do I get a dial indicator, find #1 tdc and remove the timing wheel as I did before and line up correctly, ( and make sure to never take it apart that way again)?

Is the timing mark on these engines the vertical line on the side of the wheel just above the ring gear or is it on top of the flywheel?

This site is great for helping me fix my screwups

The mark outta be on the side of the flywheel. When # is at TDC (a pencil will do in this case) ONE of the marks of the flywheel outta align with the pointer.

-W

Re: Timing Merc 1000

Thanks Clams, Everything worked out great. Timing was right on. I even got around to doing a compression test (120,125,130,125,120,125). She's running like a sewing machine now.

A little question - I have done the same trick, and I read in the book that when #1 is on tdc, the 0 mark on the flyweel shall be aligned to the pointer. Is this correct, or will any mark do?
My powerhead (115 HP i6 from 1984) is in several parts spread on my work bench, awaiting bearings and piston from the US of A, so I am not able to see it now.

-M-

I don't know if mine is the same as yours, but what I did was.

1. Find #1 TDC
2. There are 3 timing marks on the side of the flywheel. From left to right they are: 2 dots, then a vertical line, then 1 dot.
3. Remove the pulley cover from the distributor.
4. At TDC the arrow should be pointing inward at the vertical line. If this is correct you at least have correct flywheel position. Then set timing as per manual.

P.S. The vertical line was just used to align the distributor w/ flywheel and TDC. The 2 dots were used to time it of the cowl.

Re: Timing Merc 1000

Thanks. My flyweel is a little different. I have several marks, some with numbers and one clearly marked with a 0 (zero).
I guess I stick with the theory from the book - try to get the TDC on #1 as close to the zero mark as possible.
