Timing of having the marine survey done

Question -

I am interested in a used boat, I mentioned to the dealer that I wanted to have a survey done on the boat (its a 1999, would need it anyway for insurance reasons) and the dealer said I could not have the survey done without some form of purchase commitment. But - wouldn't I need the information in the survey to help decide the final offer I will make on the boat that I would already need to have agreed upon in making that commitment in the first place? This is a reputable, large dealer, they have been very good in communications thus far, I'm not all that concerned about their reputation or anything like that.

Thoughts? This isn't all that unusual, is it?

Strikes me as kind of strange..

Ask the dealer if they would agree to take a fully refundable deposit to allow a surveyor to survey it, and get it in writing.. If they won't agree to those terms, I'd say walk out on that deal..

Curious.. What is the boat?

Perfectly normal... You place an offer subject to a satisfactory survey and a sea trial and place a deposit. If the survey turns up something you don't like, offer to adjust the price to fix the problems or cancel the deal and get your deposit back. If all goes well, then the sea trial. Even if the survey doesn't tur up much, try and talk the price down a bit with it anyways - you've got nothing to lose. Don't use the surveyor they recommend, there are lots of bad ones out there.

Hi fonzie04
Airman pretty much covered it all.
I'll try to put it another way (saying the same thing)

Ask yourself this. If the survey had been done last week. And it came out perfect. And you took it out for a Sea Trial today and it preformed the way you wanted. Would you buy it today?
If your answer would be yes.
Then make a offer and deposit as airman said subject to Survey and Sea Trial!
Before you ever get to sea trial or demo your credit will already been approved but it still gives you a way out. You can back out by just saying you don't like the way it handles. And you will get your deposit back. Or a simple excuse as "My wife just doesn't feel safe in the boat"

And yes this is Perfectly normal as airman said.

Hope this helps a bit.

Link
