timing on 50hp seahorse

went to look at my engine started her up she back fired once then started she ran then cut out and back fired an engineer was there and he said it sounded like timing and dont run it any more where do i start with the this?

You're going to need to give us some more information about your outboard. What year and model is it? There are several versions of 50 hp Johnsons over the years, and the answer to your question will depend on which model you have.
