Hello All,

Can anyone offer some insight here... I am trying to align the timing pointer on my 1999 115 V4 (optical ignition) so I can complete a link and sync.

The manual says to turn the crankshaft clockwise until the TDC mark is approx 1" past the timing pointer. Then insert the piston stop tool until it contacts piston. (no 1 cyl) Then hold the no. 1 piston against the piston stop tool by turning the timing wheel and place a mark on the timing wheel adjacent to the timing pointer. This is where I have a problem: The piston is already going away from the stop tool at 1" past TDC?! Any ideas?

It goes on to say continue to turn crank clockwise until the no. 1 piston contacts the stop tool again, make a new mark. If the midpoint of the two marks is aligned with TDC then the timing pointer is properly aligned. If not, turn the timing wheel CW to align the timing pointer with the midpoint mark and then hold the timing wheel in this position and align timing pointer with the TDC mark printed on the timing wheel.

Also, just to confirm, cylinder no. 1 is the top starboard cylinder correct?

Thank You

So basically bottom the piston stop tool at 1" past the TDC mark and hold the timing wheel there by putting slight counter clockwise pressure on it with a socket wrench? Even though the manual says not to turn counter clockwise?

Then turn the timing wheel clockwise until it hits the piston stop again and halfway between those two points is top dead center?

Thanks for the info Benny.

V4 cylinder numbering-looking from behind boat at the sparkplugs.

The sparkplugs are not directly across from each other. the stb. side upper plug is the highest, which is #1. The next one down, #2, is on the port side and #3 is lower yet on the stb. side.

A dial indicator will not account for crankshaft over-lap when the piston come's to stop at top dead center. If you were to bring the piston to TDC. The dial indicator will stop moving at this point. Mark this point exactly on the flywheel. Watch the indicator until it starts to count down from TDC. Mark this point on the flywheel. The distance between these two point's are the degree's you are not accounting for when setting the pointer by this method. Some engines are set by this method, but these degree's are accounted for. If you look at these V-4, V-6 engines, the piston's are not exactly side by side, such as if you put a straight edge across the sparl plug hole's you will find they are in a stacked position. The highist cylinder is alway's No.1

can't we do the same work by moving inward the piston stop tool while it touching the piston till we notice that it's moving outwards?
