I've been doing some research due to the ignition problems I've been having - and ran across something related to advancing the timing by adjusting the timing roller. Alot of guys say this should be done on any 60 degree motor - sure its simple to do but whats the side effects of doing this?

Reason for doing this: advancing the spark before the throttle plates start to open, helps acceleration on some boats and richens up the midrange which can help during heatsoak.

Picture of how it looks before the adjustment - notice the arrow - it states the roller on the right should be touching the arm on the left

Wouldnt that cause the timing to be too far advanced at WOT causing pre detonation and burned pistons?

Those settings are made as part of a step-by-step procedure defined in the Linkage and Synchronization section of your motor's factory service manual. They are not uniform across all models and years, so beware.

thats what I thought. as well as upping your gas bill - in doing that i would think you'd have to run 93 octane because of its combustion resistence but they said nothing about that.

If its ok - and someone will have to tell me - i'll post a link to that forum with the info. It seems like every carbed 60* motor owner on that site that has come across that post has made the adjustment. I also kept reading and came across the question of - what are the affects in doing this? the response was just a smile on your face. BUT i'm not so sure.
