Hi folks I was out changing the oil and Tuning up the boat for the summer and am having a hard time with the timing. My motor is a 1996 VP 4.3L. PN# 4110131949 and SN# 386B186 I think. It is a 1996 boat but I am wondering if the motor is a 1997. The book states that 1994 to 1996 should be at 6 deg BTDC and 1997 on should be 18 deg BTDC. When I try and set the timing using the shunt it sure runs a lot smoother and idles better with the 18 deg BTDC setting. Any ideas what year my motor is and what the timing should be set at both base and idle.

Thanks

What "Book" are you looking at that says a 97 should have 18°BTDC? It sure isn't the Volvo manual. Not sure why you would you think you would have a 97 engine in a 96 boat? An older motor yes, but not newer.
Anyway, you have one of those confusing models that is called an NC model, but shows using the HU model parts catalog, and using both NC and HU model service manuals. Sounds confusing, but acutally they are the same.
The timing, however depends on several things.
Are you using 86AKI or 89AKI (regular or premium) fuel and is your oil pan cast aluminum with ribs or stamped steel like most oil pans?

The cheap stuff 87AKI and I have the stamped steel pan. The manual I am using is the Clymer manual. It must be a typo because it says it should advance to 25 deg BTDC at 3500RPM's.

The NC and HU are just random letters. Here is a link to the Volvo service bulletin on ID

Volvo Engine ID

This is from the Volvo manual. It will give you some idea of how far off the clymers actually is.
This is the setting WITH the shunt in place. When removed the timing should be around 6°BTDC. It won't be steady, but close. Around 4600 it should only go to the 18° neighborhood.

Clymers, I should have guessed. I think it has more typo's than good info.

So I assume that the little line just after the big line on the pulley is the 5 Deg mark?
