Ok, Im trying to set the timing on my volvo aq151b. I replaced the points with an ignitor electronic ignition. book says 6 btdc, but wont run at this setting. Book also says to use 93 octane fuel. But I am using 87. Timing it by ear, I can get it to run pretty good at 11 to 12 degrees. Will 6 octane points make this much differnece, or do I need to to start trouble shooting.

Thanks

Is the timing belt worn out? Tensioner bad? Points new and the dwell set properly. How about the rest of the tuneup (plugs, cap, rotor, condenser)?
How about the fuel system, any water in the carb, is the idle mixture adjusted properly, how about idle speed? Is it to spec. ?

Did it run at 6* before you changed the ignition? Some of those conversions require a replacement coil. Timing belt, Like Don said, could be checked, may be worrh replacing anyway.

Dumb me, didn't check before I changed points, and new to me boat, so don't know initial setting. Cap and rotor look good, I was thinking timing belt. Looks good, but I don't know the age, so going to replace.

Ill change the belt and get some new gas see if it changes.
