Never saw an engine timing at one degree BTDC. That is what the marinizer of the new GM engine wants -- Barr Marine by EDM. Sounds crazy. I am used (77 years) to 6 - 8 degrees. Is that the difference with EST?

Re: Timing

You need to put it in base mode with a jumper wire.......
The procedure has been posted relatively recently....
Scan the posts from the last two weeks or so.......:)

Re: Timing

Thanks Haut.... I do know HOW to do it. Was just looking for an explanation of the timing recommended by Barr Marine. Just can't imagine one degree. What a waste. Maybe some kind of emission thing, efficacy notwithstanding. Or did it have to do with the EST system of which I am totally ignorant...

Re: Timing

What you need to do is STOP trying to put old logic to new technology. It just plain won't work.
The explanation is simple. What you set the timing at when the EST is IN base timing mode, has absolutly nothing to do with what happens when it's taken OUT of base timing mode.
Do it like the book says, and all will work fine.

Re: Timing

EST-electronic spark timing. It does the timing curve electronically, but it needs a base to work from. 1* is the base set by the engineers. If you want to advance the whole curve then set the base further advanced and if you start melting spark plugs, burning holes in pistons and/or burning valves, you won't have to waste time figuring out why.:D

Don S. ..... What book says how to do it? I am living in the 1960 ignition mentality and need some study time with the right book.... Thanks for all the help so far.....

Re: Timing

Get ahold of the service manual specific to your engine... Not a seloc or any other generic. Get the genuine factory manual....

Re: Timing

What engine do you actually have? Never heard of Barr Marine engines. I do know Barr makes manifolds and risers.

Here is some info on the EST ign system and how it works.

Thanks admiral... This is what I need. Unfortunately the right margin was severly cut in the post. Could you try again or tell me where you got it?
