timing

I have twin 1985 454 350 hp. Was going to check timing but the plate on the timing cover has no numbers just 4 points on the plate sticking out over the blancer. Does any one know what each point means. Like 2 4 6 8 or what. The book states to set at 10 degres before top dead center. Thanks
