Buying a timing light today and going to time my motor. The manual says all 3 cyl except 70hp is 2 degrees atdc, is this correct and is putting it in a barrel, in forward the same as tying it to the dock?

Re: timing

We dont worry too much about actual idle timing. That will vary with set up. It has to do with backpressure. Whatever the book calls for is a good starting point but your actual (best idling) timing may be different.

WOT timing is a different story. It has to be varified under a load. No matter what method you use to set the initial. Setting top end timing in a barrel can be tricky at best.

Re: timing

I'll do the top end in the water with the brother in law driving....got me a timing light today :)
As long as it's close to spec use your ears for idle timing, got it.
Should I trust the pointer for tdc? Do they move if hit or should I borrow a dial indicator?
Thanks for the help
Matt

Re: timing

Its always a good idea to set the pointer first.

I would suggest checking the top timing while on the trailer backed into the water so the motor has a load on it at 5500.

Hanging off the back while under way can be a bit more exciting than you want it to be.

Re: timing

my mechanic friend told me how to get tdc with a vernier caliper... worked great and the mark is dead on.
