2.jpguntitled.jpg3.jpgThis is a 1978 Chrysler BassRunner 85.
I added the tape measure for size comparison in these pics. I am trying to decide the best way to repair these. Should I sand lightly and use tex? ...or should I just use 5200 to seal? I am not going for cosmetic value here, but I also am not a fan of not doing things right. Mainly, I want to make sure no water gets in through these little guys. Other than these pics, I probably have maybe 8 or so similar scratches on the hull.
Also-I read I should use acetone to clean before applying the 5200 or the marine tex to make a nice clean area and to make sure that nasty water stays away from the chems. Since this is my first time repairing, I jut want to make sure I do everything properly. Thanks a bunch!

Welcome to iBoats!!!

Galatians 2:20

Not sure how far you want to go with this? Do you want to Re-Gelcoat it or Paint it to get it close? What are your desires??

Re: tiny cracks in gel coat.

Ahh, a fellow Christian I see! :) God bless you friend! (what will everyone say when we are all still here after midnight tonight?)

I do not have any desire to paint or re-gelcoat. I adore my old Chrysler, but not looking to impress anyone with looks. I just want to keep water out. I have to seal my drain plug sleeve with the 5200, and a few screw holes on transom from fish finder, etc., and I don't want to waste the rest of the tube so I was thinking, hey, maybe I could use it for these little scratches/gouges?

"The wisdom of man is foolishness to GOD!" "NO man Knows the Hour!" But I KNOW he IS coming!

Now I normaly would NOT say this, and I probably will get HIT for doing it but... Yeah you can use the 5200 to fill those cracks and gouges. Is it the BEST way, prolly not, but for a quick temporary fix, it will suffice.

See you on the other side, brother!!!!;)

Thank you sir for the honest advice. :) I will more than likely do just that. My plan is to really get into this ole' girl this winter. If I can keep extra water out in the meantime I will.
I shouldn't reply to the other comment really, but I must say foolish is he who knows not the difference begtween religion and faith.

thanks again Woodonglass~!

I appreciate that and I will come lookin' for ya this winter when I am ready to really get into it!! I am planning on doing the whole gel coat as well as the deck, transom, and whatever else I happen to uncover as I know there will be more.
You know, now that I think about it, I have a built in cooler up on the bow with about a dime sized hole in the fiberglass. I am thinking the tex may be a good fix for this? I didn't realize the hole was there, somehow didn't see it, and my wife and I were cruisng around the lake...well, all of the sudden I felt wet floor and must admit, my heart sunk for a second before I realized the water was coming from the melting ice in the cooler!

Re: tiny cracks in gel coat.

This is ALWAYS in my boat. Ace Hardware. OR AQUAMEND. Slice off a piece roll it into a ball mold it into the area needing patched above OR below water and your FIXED.

As you can see I never said the damage was structural..just IF it was structural..

I only suggested ( via TOA ) that the Christian scriptures ( or any religion ) should not be addressed here .. ( I thought you guys were going to get slammed by the mods personally ).

This Is Iboats..We would like the opportunity to be a part of any process and pics that you chose ..

Please super..dont get me wrong here.. but We can help a lot in forthcoming repairs/restorations .. If you want to restore based on One members opinion..then please use the PM option here.

I never meant to offend your religion or Beliefs .. just a guy who wants to help you out with good advise as a pro in the field of Glass repair..

Again..if you dont want to grind and glass these things out..then leave it alone ( no need to skim it over with 5200 ).

Got pics of the forward cooler leak please ..

Peace.. YD.

I vote for Woodonglass as appearing the most religious, here. You other guys need to try harder.
