Step 1. Get a manual.

Perform additional steps as outlined in the manual. Generally, the carb is completely disassembled. All parts are then either soaked in carb cleaner or spray-type carb cleaner is sprayed in and on all parts, paying particular attention to passages. With compressed air, blow all passages dry. Re-assemble with a new carb kit.

would the fuel line situation also be sorted out in the manual. i have worries doing this, i have little experience with boat motors but its always worth giving it a try.

STEP 2! please dont make new post on same motor we are working on.

Its about like haveing the motor apart and scattered around in two or three diffrent shops...miles apart...can you emagin trying to make it run again....Grin!

Keep all your questions on the original post. Even if it goes into the hundreds.

Like Boatboy said...Manual is number one.

Also if you do a search on this forum you will find hundreds of post on how to clean carbs.

Good luck!

I have one tip to share: don't go poking wire in the tiny orfices of the carb once you have it apart. Cut a nylon bristle from a paint brush or some other brush and use that. Those orfices are machined exactly and you can mess them up by clumsily using steel wire to poke around. Don't ask how I know this just trust me that it's true.

I agree with itstippy - tolerances are pretty small in there and could be easily opened up by a hamhanded diy'er and steel wire.

My OMC manual for my 40 HP suggests the use of a hypodermic syringe (no needle) to squirt denatured alcohol through the small passages. I tried it and it works great - plus you have a visual indicator that the passage is cleared (something you don't get with compressed air).

If you have any doubt whatsoever about the fuel lines, just replace them. Use OMC not aftermarket replacements. On a used motor, you have no idea about the age of the lines, so starting with new lines allows you to rule out rotting fuel lines as a problem. (run some gas through the new lines before hooking up to carbs. Last new lines I installed had small rubber bits inside - I don't have to tell you where they ended up!)

A word of caution in using spray carb cleaner, protect your eyes ! When you spray into a hole you never know where it will come out and it stings like hell :)
