Tips for '68 MFG Westfield Regal Restoration

I just picked up my "new to me" 1968 MFG Westfield Regal. Planning on restoring it gradually while continuing to use it. Anybody with any tips for someone who's never restored before?

I've been on this site all day reading different posts. I think I'll start by checking the condition of the transom. It's the only part of my boat that actually has wood in it. What is the best way to check for rot?
