Now that I got the baby running great again, starting easy cold, and idling nice at 5-600 rpm, the only trouble I run into is starting the engine again when it's warmed up (160 degrees). With it having auto chokes (which I don't really understand like I should) and a non electronic ignition, are there any tips for restarting a warm engine. It starts with a few pumps on the throttle and a turn of the key cold, but hot, I always seem to be doing something wrong, and it takes a bit. Not sure if I'm flooding the carb, or starving it, and any advice would be appreciated, thanks:)

jawzzy, Being around a few of the forums I seem to recall a problem with "vapor lock" with those Mercs and the addition of a low pressure fuel pump to stop pressure loss in the fuel line. Might try the red "search" feature at top of page and search vapor lock. Good luck

Re: tips on starting WARM 83 3.8 OMC??

thanks for the tip, but it's not a merc, and it's not that serious. It does start, but not like when it's cold, on the first turn of the key. I'm sure it's got something to do with the auto choke. I've found that as soon as I begin starting the engine, the choke begins to be released, and that's when it starts. I've tried turning the key, waiting a few seconds, then it seems to start better, but what I'm really looking for is a suggestion on throttle position. Starting cold, I pump, then leave it on just a bit. But what about hot:no throttle, more throttle, etc??????????

I have the same problem thanks for the tip of two pumps for cold starts. I have no way of controlling the throttle independently of the shifter, at least none I can see. Kind of a dumb idea that.
As with you I think the choke has a lot to do with it. The exhaust heats mine.
But it would help me a great deal to have the ability to increase the throttle a bit
I guess have to look at different controls
Alex

I went for 2 months with my throttle till someone showed me a way to release the throttle independently by pulling the WHOLE leaver straight out, which then provided throttle only. Have you tried that:) I know I felt stupid;(

Here is a couple of thing to try. To start with when cold on OMC engines pull the handle toward you to release the shifter. Then push it all the way to full throttle a couple of times this allows the choke to set and spirts a little fuel in the intake with each pump.

When hot still pull toward you and advance just a little but do not pump as do not need the extra fuel when hot. What I often do when fishing where I want engine to start fast. Before I shut the engine off I pull the shifter lever toward me to release the shifter, then I advance the throttle to about 1000 RPMS and shut it off. Then to start just turn the key and it starts very fast.

If you still have trouble starting hot then I would pull the flame arester and before starting look in the carb and see if the choke is open or closed. If it is closed then it need to be adjusted.

thanks Boatist, that's exactly the kinda tip I was looking for, and it makes perfect sense too:)
I'll try the stopping and starting at 1000rpm's, and let ya know.

Alex: as Boatist says, I think if you pull the handle towards you to release the shifter, you'll find it does:) good luck!
