Tips or tricks for uncapping

Well now I must be crazy if I am about to take the top half of my boat off and lay it on the ground, right. I took off the rub rail and drilled out all of the rivets. How heavy do you guys think it might be? Any tricks or tips? It looks like there is some sealant that I can just run a knife threw to loosen up. Do they sell replacement rub rails or do I have to treat the old one like gold? thanks

Best thing to do is get a few buddies to lift it off. Ours had sealant also and we just cut through it with a razor. We built a rolling stand for it to rest on (see my thread in my sig). More people the better because ours sagged a little in the middle and now we have a couple more cracks to repair :) Are you asking about the entire rubrail (channel and rubber?) Or just the rubber part or just the channel? I know west marine sells them but they are awfully expensive, we are going to polish ours since its just aluminum.

Re: Tips or tricks for uncapping

All depends on the layout of the boat. The cap on my Glastron ( links below ) is really heavy...I think it makes up over half the weight of the boat. I have 10 pulleys and braided 1/2inch rope that I use to lift the cap off the boat by myself. Since my boat is an ongoing project, the hull and cap get refitted often. I support the hull using old boat cover straps that I sewed loops into with upholstery thread. I made 4 of those for the points where I lift the boat from ( slipped around the entire gunnel once the boat was split after removing the rub rail ). I haven't had any problems with the cap deflecting, and I had it suspended in the air for 2 weeks without issue.

Unless you intended to change your rub rail and have the budget for it,treat it like gold cause pound for pound it's almost as expensive.

Rub rail came off perfect so I guess I will just polish and reinstall when the time comes. I think three guys can move it and I will build some bracing so that some parts dont droop and flop around to much.
