Does anybody have any helpful tips on rebuilding lower unit on 1985 Evinrude 6HP E6RCOB? My usual “Go To source” (LeeRoy’s Ramblings) has only a little info on Lower Unit repair for this Model. For example, should the engine be in Forward Gear vs. Neutral vs. Reverse when I separate the Lower Unit Gearcase from Midsection? Also, what are the main areas where leakage occurs? (I have already examined the lower and upper Gear Oil Fill Plugs and these seem OK—not crossthreaded, etc). It would seem like there are only 3 possible areas: 1) the Fill Plugs/Washers 2) Seal where Gearcase attaches to Midsection and 3) Seals along Propeller Shaft (there are multiple Seals). I also plan to use a coat hanger jig and feeler gauge to check for a bent Prop Shaft—runout should not be more than 0.010 inches. I understand a bent Prop Shaft will continually wear out Seals and eventually ruin Gears. Thanks for any help.

Shift position does not matter.----The shift rod is " dummy proof " and slides right out.----I install 2 O-rings on the shift rod.----Reason.----There is room for 2 of them and 2 O-rings are used on the big motors.
