A tire dealer said I should consider Dunlop over Mitchelin. What do you think? Is this like asking Johnson VS Evinrude?

This will bring big contraversy.
I say us Mitchelin, only because we haul them and the more you buy the more we haul.
Other than that, Round and Holds air is good for me.

Re: Tire Brands

I have run both brands on the trucks where i used to work.
The Michelin get much better tire life than Dunlops.
They ride much better too.

All 3 of our vehicles here at home have Michelin.
The one car has 101k on the odometer with the original Michelin tires.
It is on its second set of brake pads but the tires are no where near being worn out.

With tires you get what you pay for.;)

Giving an opinion with so little information isn't possible. What size and type of tire are you're looking for, plus how do you plan to use it?

I am shopping around for a set of Michelin LTX MS/2 P265/70R18 to replace the stock Goodyear Wrangler SR/A's that came on my truck. We'll see what spending a little extra gets me.

Huh! I bought that same tire yesterday in 17" for my Avalanche to replace the same POS Goodyears you have! Went to Discount Tire. Not only were the Michelins cheaper than the Bridgestone RevoII's I was considering, right now they also have a $70 rebate. Screamin deal for that much tire

Yup... Wifey wrote that deal down along with a few others. She called all the local tire dealers around here and they couldn't touch it. So I'll probably get them there too and have them mounted and balanced locally.

Hey, let us know how the tires ride. I have an 07' Nissan Titan. It's a nice truck, but I expect your Avalanche is better insulated against noise. I'm hoping the Michelins will quiet down the ride some on my truck. It's funny, when I bought the truck I remarked at how quiet it was compared to the Explorer. Now, I'm complaining the tires are noisy.

on motorcycles the i would get 2 to 3k more out of the michelin compared to the dunlop. when you replace tires every 8k or less this is alot. i would prefer the michelin tires on a road vehicle.

Personal preference but I think Michelin is over rated. Depends on speed rating and size for the application.

Sucks they no longer make the LTX-MS. The MS-2 is the new design with different white letters.
Figures i have 2 new ones for my truck and can't find 2 more to match...

Also check Costco. They were only a buck more expensive than Discount Tire, but their tire disposal charge at $15 each vs. $3 at Discount was the game changer for me. May be less where you live. As far as Michelins being overrated, I think you can find that all manufacturers have their niche in certain types of tires. Michelin builds a great truck tire historically, I personally like their motorcycle tires also, but have had poor service from several of their passenger tires. Their warranty is pretty crappy should you need it, they don't believe they've ever built a bad tire. I say this as a former Ops manager for a tire distributor with seven wharehouses in five states. I've dealt with everyone in the business. But yes yesterday I put a set on my Avalanche because I know they do build a quality tire in this application.

Michelins on the Avalanche
BFG All Terrain KO on my Jeep (I like the additional sidewall reinforcement in rocky conditions)
Michelin Pilot roads on my BMW 1150 RT
Metzlers on my Husky TE510
Maxxis radials under my boat
See I spread it around!

I put a set of Micehlins LTX on my Suburban and have loved them since the day I got them.. Smooth and quiet on dry roads and no hydro plane on the wet ones. I have over 70K on them and still have some tread left.

I have OEM Michelins on my 2009 Mazda 6 and they suck in the snow. Royally suck. otherwise they are fine..

Re: Tire Brands

When a person is looking for tires in my mind there is two basic things to look at. One what there going to primarily going to be used for and how much your looking to spend. Like said before you get what you pay for.

I've always found the Michelins to have too hard of a compound. Sure, they last forever, but IMO, they don't hold well in wet braking conditions or hard acceleration.

I'm a BFG fan. The BFG All Terrian KO's are an awesome all around tire for SUV's/trucks. They do everything great and last well over 50K miles. They are aggressive looking (and performing) but are very quiet on the highway. The downside, they are not cheap!

I have Michelin MXV4 tires on my Pacifica. Great tires if you live in the south... just they don't come with any road warranty because they're considered performance tires. Get the best bang for your buck and the longest tire warranty.

I may be going waaaaay out on a limb here but I run TOYO's on both my jeep (15" mud terrains) ant pickup 05 2500 dodge(17"open countrys) and both serve me very well with on & off road travel. not too pricey either.
probably out of my league here but it's my 2 cents
