Check to make sure that your wheel nuts are tight. jack up that side of the trailer and push and pull on the tire. Of course it shouldn't move. If that is tight then it could be a bent spindle. You can have it checked or just get a new one. Hope that helped.

yes you are right ..the boat is off about one inch toward the right hand side of the trailer...... would that make that much difference ? now what should i do ? take the boat & trailer to the nearest lake and re-trailer it ! or can i do something with the tire psi ?

thank you .... i am new to pulling a boat ! scott from california

Re: tire ware !

easiest way is to reload you can usually just dip it untill the stern just barely starts to float and push it over a little just remember to pull out slowly untill the boat is clear of the water.

Re: tire ware !

A boat that is not loaded squarely will not affect tire wear. You may have any one or more of other issues however:
1) Bent spindle
2) Bent axle
3) Overloaded trailer
4) Too much toe in or toe out (not adjustable except through bending by an alignment shop). Once it is bent and straightened it will likely bend again.

Wear on the inside of the tire indicates that the top of the wheel is either tilted slightly inward due to overloading or a bent spindle/axle. Park on a level surface and then stand back from the rear of the trailer about 20 feet. If you can visually detect that the top of the wheel is tilted in, look carefully at the center of the axle. If the axle is bowed downward, that is more evidence that the trailer may be overloaded or the axle is bent. Compare what you see with the left side wheel. If one wheel is perfectly vertical and other is tilted inward, you likely have a bent spindle. If both sides are tilted in you have a bent axle or the trailer is overloaded.

Scott, check one other item. Measure the distance from the tongue to the front of each tire on each side. A string will suffice. Both side should measure the same. This will ensure the trailer is tracking properly, the axle is mounted square to the frame and the trailer isn't bent.

sorry but you are wrong an improperly or unevenly loaded vehicle of any kind to include a boat trailer can cause uneven tire wear.

Re: tire ware !

An inch either way should not wear a tire more on one side.
I have pulled all kinds of trailers and loads over the last 30 years and never heard of that one.
He has a bent spindle, overloaded axle or its out of line on the trailer.
No way i can believe an inch or so off center with the boat is the problem.

I'm with Silvertip on this one. No need to repeat what has already been posted.

Re: tire ware !

depending on the weight and size of the boat and gear 1-2" can shift a significant amount of weight from center. this is also the simplest solution to the problem so he should start here.

Re: tire ware !

With that logic car tires should always show more wear on the drivers side because that's where the driver sits and there is hardly ever anyone in the passenger seat. One inch won't make one bit of difference. In 650 miles of travel there is something wrong with the alignment on this trailer.

I agree with the others to have noticeable tire wear on a 650 mile trip, is likely to be caused by a bent spindle, bent axle or an alignment problem.

Re: tire ware !

Um, not to be simple, but check that all tires are the same, and have the same outside diameter. I picked up an old boat last year, dragged it home and rolled it into the garage for a closer inspection. Well, heck, one tire was almost completely bald on the inside....but pretty much new on the outside. I hummed and hawed, checked the axle to make sure it was square to the tongue, checked the frame to make sure it wasn't twisted on jack stands, checked to make sure the boat was centered on the trailer, and of course checked air pressure. Huh, no problems here...time go get a beer and think this one over. Standing on my driveway I noticed the boat sat lower on one side then the other, I began to worry that the boat was sagging on one side, becuase it was most certainly center. Well after much panic, it occured that I should check the tires again. Sure enough the right tire was two inches smaller then the left, and the spare was 1 inch larger! Went out to Princess Auto, got 3 new tires with rims...and voila..no more uneven tire wear!

Different tire manufacturers, even with the same size stamp, can vary slightly in outside diameter.
