Hi all,
The 1999 175 Ocean Pro Johnson on my fishing boat has had a long and reliable life. With about 800hrs, however, it is starting to show it's age mechanically. This past weekend out it was especially cantankerous to start and at one point I ran it WOT and only achieved 4500rpm under a pretty normal load. When I got back and got the boat washed down and put away, I did a compression test which revealed the following. 80-85-100-95-65-85. I should add that this was using a quality SnapOn compression gauge set. I feel like ALL of these numbers are on the low side and even still, we're looking at a 35% spread.... not ideal.
The engine is still quite reliable albeit a little tough to start occasionally. It idles decent for the most part and has plenty of power to do what I want to do. There is no knocking noise.
My question is this: Say I wanted to nurse this engine along for 2 more years or maybe another 150-200hrs or so until I graduate and have more cash to spend on a new engine.... what is my best option? Run till it dies..? Cheap overhaul of some kind..? I'm not really familiar with the powerhead of this engine. All I've ever really done is water pumps, filters, an optical sensor, and trim motor since new. It's really been an awesome little motor.
Thanks all for the consideration.
