Re: Tired of Cheapskates!!

Since I live out in the "sticks", nobody will deliver to me. If they would, I would give a good tip though.

My theory in a restaurant though is a tip is not automatic. I look at it like this:
Poor service = No tip.
Average service = Average tip
Excellent service = Excellent tip.

I like the restaurants that ask if you want to leave a tip on your card before you even eat. Like i'm supposed to forsee what kind of service i'm going to get.

If someone just "expects" a tip no matter what kind of service, then they probably should look for a different type of job.

Re: Tired of Cheapskates!!

here's a great, funny story, hope it comes out that way on a post. probably had to be there-

about 6 years ago, i lived in newport with 4 other guys, attending surface warfare officer school. we had all just graduated from the academy, so we were just living like college kids for the first time at age 22. one sunday afternoon, one of my housemates ordered a pizza. when the doorbell rang, i had just come from the kitchen and met him at the door as he answered it. the pizza guy says, "that will be $9.05." bobby (the housemate) says, "here's a $10, wait a minute." he then proceeded to leave me and pizza guy standing at the door as he ran up the stairs. we both just stood there, not knowing what to say or do. about a 5 minutes later, he comes running down the stairs and hands the pizza guy a nickel. "there. that makes it an even buck." well, if you could have seen the look on the pizza guy's face. he looked down at the nickel in his palm for a second, then let it drop to the ground at my buddy's feet. "thanks anyway", and he walks off. i felt fortunate to witness the whole unbelievable event, and of course ran to tell the rest of our housemates. his nickname from that point on was "bobby nickels."

Carpy, poor service equals small tip for me. Wouldn't want them to think I forgot!! Just left an appropriate amount, provided it's the servers fault.

Re: Tired of Cheapskates!!

they are a waiter, they get the customary tip ... 15%, 20 % if they are under 30 mins

NO tip? never, even babeeb, the roach coach raghead gets 15%!

cold pizza? ah well, toss it in the oven for five minutes, actually, I prefer cold pizza, heat an iron skillet up then plunk the pizza in there, and broil it till cheese goes a bit browner

crust is crispy, the cheese hot, woo hoo, break out the beer the pizza is HERE!

To
Insure
Proper
Service

That is what I have been told that TIPS stands for. Does make sense, want good service, then pay up. Want to save money, squeeze that penny, don't tip and get what you deserve.

We even give gifts every Christmas to our pizza guy and Drive thru carry-out employees. They work hard for it and are worth it.

SS

1st Do you get an hourly wage or just work on tips ? ?
2nd I've worked for over 30 years and never been tipped provide my own gas and power tools.
3rd I tip according to service It starts at 20% and if I feel that the wait staff isn't up to snuff I down grade the tip all the way down to a penny at times
Some wait staff know that they are going to get a tip regardless of good or bad service.

Re: Tired of Cheapskates!!

I usually try to give a tip, my better half is better about it, as she always has cash. Me, I use debit, credit, and checks so I rarely have cash. In a pinch I'll write the check a few bucks over, he still gets the tip (as far as I know)...

Sometimes I get tips (I am an exterminator), and they are good ones, like $20 here, $50 there, and I get a lot of food. And yes, I have caught the "vibe" off the lonely housewife, but my morals won't allow me to partake. Now, when I was single, and the women were single, lets just say there were a few good dates after killin' the spiders... :D

You gotta be carefull though, as you can end up jobless if you missunderstood her intentions. We had a greasy fat guy working for us last year that would just show up at women's houses at wierd times (evenings/weekends). We fired him for other reasons, and shortly afterwards we started finding out a lot of bizarre things. I would show up at a house and the lady would say "thank God its you, and not that fat guy, he did this and that". We could have been sued by some of the people he harrassed...

lol jee70611 & JasonJ--had to ask that question :D

My bride and I tip very well (mostly resturants as no delivery by us for P pie). When we do go out our kids (younguns)are with us. A good waitress that recognizes the need for fast "get the order, serve the order, check back to see if alls well" professional receives a huge tip 'cause she/he recognizes the needs of parents.

btw jee, am glad you do what you do professionaly and enjoy the work.

I can't get pizza delivered either, and I'm not that far into the sticks.
I always leave a good tip, at least 15%. Even to the 18 year old waiter at Denny's who hadn't blown his nose in a couple of weeks.
The one thing that can p1ss off the misses and me more than most other things is when the waiter or waitress comes back every 90 seconds to ask "is everything ok here?" More than a few have lost out on a good tip because they just wouldn't leave us alone.

I tip 5.00 on all my orders. I know for the most part that the guyz who are doing the delivery are school kids tryin to make a buck. All my orders are devivered with in the hour of placeing, and delivered so hot we cant eat right away, have to let cool. I think they know who I am, and that I'm gona tip 5.00, and treat me well.

Re: Tired of Cheapskates!!

jee70611

I know where you are comming from but don't get upset just because some people don't TIP! Some very few, IMHO are just ignorant, like other's I'm going to give you a true story.
20 years ago a friend and I were eating lunch in a small Mom and Pop Cafe... the average bill for lunch and drinks soda/ Coffee was about 10 bucks. So I left 12 bucks, my friend left 10 dollars. I asked him why don't you tip the waitress. He said I get paid for doing my job.. why should I pay her extra for doing her job??? So I explained to him that the waitress was only making $2.75 a hour and being taxed 10 per cent on all of her tickets.. IE: If a table paid $100.00 dollars and didn't tip it cost HER 10 Dollars to serve them... she lost money... if they paid 10 percent she broke even.. if you paid 20 percent she made a 10 percent profit
Just my thoughts.

Re: Tired of Cheapskates!!

I will usually avoid restaurants that automatically add on a tip. That burns me up! I also did hoagie delivery during college and didn't get many tips from the college students. But then, I didn't expect it, so it was no big deal. What would happen in other service industries, say, plumbing or electrical service, if you called for a quote and were told, "We will charge you $x.xx for our service and parts, but we will ask you to give at least 15% to the service man when he comes to do the job?"

I am a strong believer that the tip is up to the individual giving the tip, not the one receiving it, to decide what should be given. I am the one that determines if they gave me the service I wanted. If they do, they get rewarded, if not, they do not get as much of a reward, proportionally to the quality of service. If they go over and above, the get what I feel is an over the top tip.

And yes, I have been know to tip a service repair man or a mechanic for work that was done over and above the call of duty. A good deed deserves another.
