I have an old trailer that needs new tires. The only problem is that no one makes the size thats on it anymore and I want to get away from the 13in 4 lug tires. Was thinking about going with 12in 4lug with a load rate of 750lbs each. The trailers gross weight is 1000lbs. Would these work? I can get 3 for the price of one 13in tire. I know that I will loose 2inches of ground clearence but isn't an off road rig.

Re: Tires

I believe reducing the diameter of the tire also increases the speed at which the tire will rotate which increases heat (wear) on the tire & bearings. Something to consider if you're doing a lot of long-distance or high-speed towing (ie, highway). I think the general preference is to go bigger with tires when possible, but on the other hand, your load sounds pretty light so you might be fine.

Re: Tires

So I should be looking for a set of 38x14.5 IROKS then. Just kidding. Just don't feel like droping alot of $$$ on this thing. Just got done grabing my ankles at the DMV yesterday. I think I'll just see if the local used tire place has some used 13 inch car/truck tires for sale.

Re: Tires

From what you have described, the 12" will work perfectly well and you get a spare tire/wheel to boot There are lots of trailers spinning 8" wheels. As with any tire, keep the bearings well lubed.

Contrary to popular belief, your tires will run cooler when pressure is set to max. on side wall and they are NEVER 32psi. Usually in the neighborhood of 50psi.

If you want to keep the 13's, auto tires will work fine. Pressure to max on side wall and deduct 10% off indicated load carrying capacity. . Often times a dealer will use a 175/80/13 as a loss leader. I've bought them in the past for as low as 4 for $99 including mounting.

Re: Tires

I went to all the local big name places and they wanted an arm and a leg or couldn't find my size ect. Went to a little place today run by Billybob and his kin; as soon as I got the rim size out of my mouth he goes I have three barly used. Mounted and balanced $96 for all three. Load limit of 1060 4 ply. Thanks for the Info Dazk. I'll keep that in mind for next time. As far as the bearing go I picked up a set of bearing buddys today. I agree grease is cheap Boats are not.
