Just got a 2006 boat. It has the Mercury 5.0 Tks. Only had cold weather around 40-55 to take it out. It is a pain to get started up. Started to take a look at the carb and no choke? Is it normal for this motor to take a few to start. Use to my old omc that would fire with just a pump. Thanks

i have that same motor. tks my butt! it needs 2 or 3 pumps when cold. once it fires its all good though. the book says no to pump, just start at 1/4 throttle, well that works when warm...

TKS isn't really "turn key starting". You still need to pump the throttle twice (in neutral) and hold the throttle open about 1/3 until it starts, then back it down into nuetral after 1 or 2 seconds after starting.

Before you go bashing it though... TKS takes the place of a conventional plate choke. Does it work better or worse? Meh... it does work. And it does keep DIY'ers from setting a choke to tight or to loose. If they could do something about that damm wistle it would be great.

Either way... just start it like a normal carbed engine and you'll be fine.

Here should be a service manual link for your TKS system. http://www.4shared.com/file/137527161/1ff38a73/Service_Manual_41.html. It's been known in the past to work a little better if you can remember to cycle the "IGN" key on and off 2 times before starting, So it gives the system a chance to shoot enough fuel into the engine to be able to start the engine with out pumping the throttle, And if that still does not work then you still will need to pump the throttle a few times like the old day's. The pumping info is in the service manual, And the key cycling trick is from talking to the mercruiser tech support guy's, But comes with no guarantee that it will work every time. Good luck to you and enjoy your new boat.:)
