My trim works fine in the up mode but stops and then immediately begins to go back down as soon as the switch is released. Its my understanding that the trim cylinders give way to the tilt cylinder and the tilt cylinders take it the rest of the way up. I'm not leaking any fluid and the system is full. What are my troubleshooting methods. I'm having a hard time following the Seloc manual.

Jamie White

I would look into the trim switch first then the solenoid, I only have one trim switch on mine at the moment and it tends to get a little sticky at times so I recommend that get ruled out first.

Yes thats exactly what its doing. It also doesn't go up high enough. I have the old style - one tilt and one trim with motor. Its full of fluid. Seloc manual is no help. I'm at a loss. As Jeff said - Can someone Help?

Re: TNT 77 Johnson 115

hey Jamie I got the service book, and according to troubleshooting part, there's a handful of possibilities.

UNIT WILL RAISE ONLY PART WAY: check oil level, which you state is full.

UNIT WILL NOT HOLD IN TILT POSITION
1. Relief valve in tilt cylinder bad
2. Tilt piston "O" ring bad
3. Pump check valve bad

LEAKS DOWN IN TILT RANGE ONLY
1. Check manual release valve
2. Check for line leaks
3. Check relief valve in tilt cylinder
4. Check for excessive wear in tilt cylinder

LEAKS DOWN ALL THE WAY FROM TILT TO TRIM-IN POSITION
1. Check for oil leaks
2. Check valve in pump
3. Check manual release valve

I know some of that is far-fetched for most of us, but check the basics, like the manual release valve

Thanks Mikey,

I remember trying to unscrew the manual release valve thinking it was a drain plug like the lower unit. I stopped part way through and screwed it back in but I might have messed it up. I will recheck all the items you posted. Thanks for the info - by the way where did you get your service book - i've about had enough of the Seloc manual.

Jamie

Jamie, I ordered it from marineengine.com
cost about 45-47 bucks, don't remember
you can order like two or three books for you particular model from there, or kencook.com

by the way, is the pump a prestolite or calco? if it's been replaced it may be an arco which is prestolite replacement

I just screwed up an o-ring doing just this. If you don't have a snap-ring holding the valve in, you can open it too far and (maybe) do damage to the o-ring.

$10 and my TNT is working again (but $10 for an o-ring and a snap-ring???)

SO i take it that O rings are the ticket! Someone at a shop thought I should clean out the Valve Body, said that dirt can mess up a check ball or something... Any opinions?

Jeff

Mikey:

I'm pretty sure its a Prestolite - with the fill on the starboard side. I'll check the manual release again and see if the o=-ring is bad.

To raise the motor I have to lift pretty hard - it seems like I'm lifting against the hydraulic pressure. Is that right?

Jamie

I could be wrong, but I think it's gonna be kinda hard. It is with mine. It don't help the engine weighs almost 300 pounds.

My trim switch got stepped on and crushed. It was loose and laying on the deck - I know - pretty dumb! Can I get a replacement at the auto parts store? If so what amp switch would it be?

Jamie
