The tilt ram on my TnT is leaking fluid every time the motor is trimed/tilted, so I wanted to see if anyone has any good ideas how to fix it. The motor is a 1977 70hp Evinrude (70773s). The leak is coming from the seal at the top of the tilt cylinder where the rod exits (see pic).
The whole TnT unit was recently rebuilt with the OEM seal kit, so that cylinder cap has new o-rings and a new scraper washer. Prior to the rebuild this area did not have a leak.
So far I only have 3 ideas for a repair. First, the o-ring that goes inside the cap (between the cap and the rod) seems likes it's too small even though it came from the OEM rebuild kit, so I was thinking to try a larger o-ring to get a better seal. Not sure if this will help since the trim cylinder has the exact seal in it's cap and has no leak...
Second, the top of the cap is a little beat up from the PO which is causing the scrapper washer to be slightly out of round. If I can clean up the edges so the scraper is more round maybe this could help, except that it was like this prior to the rebuild and did not cause a problem.
The only other idea i have is to replace the whole cap with a new one.
Does anyone have any other ideas why it would be leaking from this spot and/or how to fix it?
