I have read all the threads on why to bottom paint, why not to, how to and everything in between..I am currently considering a 1990 Doral 270 that has never been bottom painted. It spent it's whole life in a slip during our short summers here on Lake Simcoe and winters up on the hard. Never had blisters except for 5 small ones just below the water line on the port side that were repaired and is totally unnoticeable. (the seller pointed it out to me). Should I just leave well enough alone. I hate to start something that will be never ending.

around here you can't leave any boat in a slip without bottom paint. Can't say, not knowing your geography, but i find 22 summers in the water with no paint unbelievable, unless you are in some alkyli spring or toxic waste dump

like you said, geography is the key! I can't remember the last time I've seen a boat with bottom paint. If you walked into a marina and asked them, they wouldn't know what you are talking about. And nope, not bad water, actually very clean fresh water. But also very cold...

I kid you not, this boat has spent all it's summers in the beautiful waters of Lake Simcoe and not a lick of bottom paint. I looked at the bottom last week and it is as near as a show room specimen as I have ever seen. The survey is this coming Friday and I am looking forward to the surveyors comments. I still have to ask....should I or shouldn't I, if indeed I buy the boat.

Save your money and do not paint.

You are in fresh water and the worst you could incur is some algae growth and some lake slime

If this is the case, i wouldn't even think about it. If there is a problem in the future you can do it. Once you do it there is just more upkeep. I have it on mine but i touch it up every season or everyother. It has to be compleatly gone over every three to four years.I boat in the river and i just don't want to be bothered scrubbing bottom at the end of the year.

Here in PR we have barnacles always sticking to the bottom. First we had it without paint and we used a scrapper to take them out but with the paint we have now they still stick but once you get a couple of waves they come off by themselves.

Thanks for all the input guys. I guess we'll just leave it au naturel for the time being and see how it goes.
