okay, piddled with her some today. ordered my manual from kencook.com and should be here soon. Found tonight I don't have spark on the starbord side of the engine. wiring is okay but there are alot of spots where the insulation is gone...so thats what I'll fix first. Then use peak volt meter to test everything for voltage, resistance..etc. When I get my manual. I also found I have a rebuilt block tonight....from what I can tell. 1978 140 Johnson..block is black...the pistons look great in the cylinders....gaskets all look new...and compression, hasn't been tested...is very tight from turning by hand after soaking pistons with oil. Supposed to have checked out earlier though with previous owner. Port side has an evinrude head...is this okay?? it is metallic blue instead of white?? can't find a number on it, when I do I'll post it. It looks identical...but I just hope its right. Now for the question, it is painted black....the black is coming off easily with carb cleaner...what is the best method of cleaning/degreasing, an outboard without compromising electronics?? I know not to get it in the carbs and such...what about degreaser or oven cleaner (what we use to remove old paint from antique tractors) and low psi water?? will that be okay if I watch where it goes?? I want to clean it before working on it...working is so much better when engine is clean...what about just removing all the electronics besides the trigger and stator?? I could also check wiring when I do that...what do you guys think?? OH YEAH!! The lower unit oil looked great...so far so good..not bad for a $499 boat, motor, trailer..trailer is great..boat is being trashed...hopefully this motor will work out...one mans junk is another mans treasure...lol Thanks again!

spray it down with GUNK, wash it down. plug what you don't want it getting into.

Oven cleaner will damage the rubber and some plastic. I use "purple stuff" for degreaseing,Its at auto part stores, the stuff you get at Wal-Mart (purple power)dosen't seem to do as good as "Purple Stuff". I think it works faster and better than "Gunk"

Johnson/Evinrude or Evinrude /Johnson are the same motors, the Evinrude part should be fine on your Motor.

Thats what I thought...I didn't think there was any difference in the two...just wanted to make sure..I had read something about a few differences at one time so I thought I would ask. So purple stuff...I've heard of that I think I'll check that out today...See if I can find some...I'd really like to get it clean before I start working on it.
