Ok, theres a coconut for whom can make any sense of this issue??

Firstly, recently bought a new boat 2007 Quicksilver 670 weekender with a 2007 mercury 115 efi fourstroke on the back. It came with a 13 1/4 17p merc prop on it.

My farther and i saw the boat out the water and all seemed rock and roll and following week we collected it from the harbour up the coast from us. We headed out and the water was glass flat, so we opened the taps and she wondered up to 18 knots then would scream off the revs and go no where :( did some research and found hundreds talking about hub slipping... So bought a prop (dirt cheap hence we bought just to check the slip) 13 1/4 19p stainless think is a merc. Went out... No better. Discovered the fishfinder was braking the surface at 18knots and bosh ventilating, unbolted and wooosh emense difference. So hooked it out the water and moved the fish finder from the engine well to the outer transom. ( back of boat not flat - engine sits slightly forward in its own recess) we also noticed the engine had been dropped to its lowest hole, cav plate 1-1/2 below bottom of the boat (V hull) so we lifted her till it perfectly inline with the deepest point. Rite then this is where its confusing me... Everything now looking rite and correctly set.

Returned to sea on a calm evening. Handles alot better and she again climbs up gets on the plan nicely at about 14-15knots (gps) then as i start to trim her all seeming good and she scoots along 23 knots then the prop starts to slip then bites then slips then bites, and keeps doin this, revs build drop build drop as she bites and lets go! Now the cav plate is just skimming below the surface so doubt shes grabbing air. Rpm 5300 when shes biting. 5800 n up when shes slipping.

Now so i went out fishing the other day water was choppy so at 3400 rpm i can trim her enough to lift the bow and comfortably ride the chop although the trim i can use before she slips is barely any. but! Any more rpm and no go slip bite slip bite slip bite... But if i trim her right in shel blat on but i just smash into the waves cause the bows not lifted... Ive been looking and reading and researching but i cant find anything similar. Engines good plenty of beans and two props same thing doubt its the hub. HELP!

I suggest that you try a 17 pitch 4 blade prop. They usually perform better in situations where a 3 blade wants to ventilate and lose grip.

You'd want to get your WOT rpm up closer to 6000 rpm.

Don't bother with anything else but what jestor68 recommends, otherwise you are spinning your wheels.

Definetly coconuts! Ok so all out top speed is not my aim im looking more for a good cruise mid range with plenty of bite and handling as it can get pretty rought round these parts so im willing to pitch down a fair bit to gain a better hole shot and acceleration. Spoke to a prop guy near me who recomended a powertech prop rxb4 in a 15pitch. Its alotta moneys so wanted some others opinions first. I have no reason to distrust him as he hasnt missguided me so far. Would you think this is too lower a pitch? He says that the powertechs tend to measure up as a pitch more in equivelant prop pitches eg 15 pitch acts more like a 16...

Also just a note i used the merc prop selector and filled in with the best weights i could and it suggests that on a 15 pitch i should be able of 32-34mph, does this sound like a propable figure?

And just to ad in a local dealer said he never sold one of these but he sells the 640 with that engine and props it with a 13 pitch which sounds way to small for my liking?

Thanks so far guys

I'd say too low pitch, go with the 17p, should be spot on...

I have to say go with what the first guy you spoke with said, that sounds about right to me, I would suggest a 16p but as he said the 15p in that model acts like a 16p

Ok ive been on the phone to him and he said That theres a pitch worth of working in the prop so im gunna buy the 15p and if the revs can take a little more pulling back then il get him to knock it up a pitch. He said in the cost of buying the prop from him if i need any alterations or slight modification hel take it and work it for free.... Not just once but twice! So i guess i can dial it in to the boat. Thanks for you opinions all worth there salt!
