To kill a tree

Neighboring property is a rental. Landlord is Indian, the only reason that matters is like any I've ever met... he's cheap!

There is a tree in his back yard that over the years not only has grown over my fence, but has shot roots into my yard where little shoots pop up as if the tree is trying to multiply. I'm tired of the problem, he don't care, the house is empty at the moment and I want to do something.

Since I can't fall the tree, what can I do to kill it?

That's really funny, the house next to me is also a rental owned by an Indian. Every time I see the landlord there I have another reason to yell obscenities at him.:|

As for killing a tree, I believe they die if a ring of bark is removed all the way around....

[colour=blue]I think it is within you legal rights to do whatever you want - to the roots on your land.

Drill a few holes, pour in the garlon.

"Ringing" a tree will usually only kill the growth above the ring. A lot of "sucker" shoots will develop below the ring.

We kill unwelcome mesquites (is there any other kind?) by pouring a pint or so of Diesel fuel around the base. Kills the whole tree in a few weeks. Not particularly environment friendly.

That should kill any shoots and roots in your yard and may even poison the whole tree.

I have heard that a few copper nails set deep into the tree will kill it. The other option is to buy about a gallon of round up and pour it around the base.

Third option is to excavate and destroy all the roots on your side.

Me personally I like to drill some small holes in the base and inset a few blasting caps! :^

Ayuh,....... This'll Work,+ you Won't even have to go to His side of the Fence,...........
Poison the Roots on Your side,+ the Whole Tree will Die,.......

Let me Guess,...... It's either a Poplar,... Or a Boxalder,..??.......

How big is the tree? Drilling holes about 10" deep and pouring Crossbow in them will work everytime. Don`t ask how I know, but I do.:^

The holes are the go, 3 X 1 inch at 45 deg and 8 to 10 inches deep, fill with a good weed killer, top up every couple of days, drill the holes just below the ground level and nobody will know, you could blame it on the lack of ground water, once its dead, demand it be remover as its a danger.

If your neighbor is really that cheap and doesn't care all you'll accomplish is killing the tree - he won't necessarily take it down. What's worse, mowing the suckers when you're cutting the lawn anyway or looking at that dead tree for who knows how long?

Maybe leaving it alone is the better option?

After it is dead it is possible that it could get hit by lightening and burn clear to the ground. I have heard of it happening on a clear sunny day.

Re: To kill a tree

Are you absolutely, positively sure you want it down? If it provides shade in the summertime, might be worth dealing with the 'suckers' & leaves in your yard. Plus it probably helps deaden noise in the neighborhood, etc. Just suggesting you double check posssible advantages (if any) it provides vs. not having it there...

As an after thought.... have you spoken with him? Offer to cut it down for free.

Even tho it is your neighbors responsibility, you have legal standing to trim the branches back over your property.

It's not illegal to kill treas in Ohio?

Don't laugh, it's a serious question. We've had a string of cases in the Vancouver, Canada area where people had to pay through the nose for it.
