i have a 1986 mercury 150 xr2. the intermitent horn is sounding and i have checked the outlet line for the oil injection system and have no oil flow. i am 95% sure that the gear is stripped on the crankshaft. i have an estimate of $550 to $700 to replace the gear on the crank. what would you suggest? if the decision is to remove the oil injection system, what are the steps required to remove the system and maintain the overheating warning?

Personally, I'd leave it in... But 550-700 bones seams very excessive.... It's not the gear on the oil pump, is it? That gear should be plastic and fairly cheap to replace IMO...
Even a new pump shouldn't cost that much and it's easy to replace yourself...

But premix should be ok...

All you have to do is remove the oil pump, cap it with a part you can buy from your parts dealer, cut the sensor leads and your ready to go... Oh yea, the oil lines need to be cut and plugged also going to the engine and on board tank...

The estimate to replace the gear is cheap ... you have to tear down the powerhead to get at it. I would expect the price to be way more ($1200 to $1600). It's easy to pull the driven shaft out and see if it's got a bunch of plastic peices on it. That will confirm if the gear is gone or not. Then you need to decide what you're going to do (premix, fix the gear, put on an aftermarket electronic oiling deal).

i removed the oil injection pump and shaft last night and did find shavings in the opening. i looked inside the motor with a flashlight and could see that the teeth looked ok on the gear and the gear was a light color. however, the shavings were a dark color??? i would assume that the gear is stripped on the crankshaft itself. is this where it is commonly stripped?

one way to test your oil gear is remove the pump but leave the shaft& plastic magnet In the shaft hole... incert a flat screw driver In the slot apply slight presure & let the screw driver rotate in the palm of your hand , CRANK the motor Over with the kill switch tripped off do NOT run the motor.. you will feel the slip Of the drive gear In your palm when it hits a bad spot in the gear...If all Is good repost & i'll take you from there.....

If you have dark plastic shaveings on the shaft or the opening, your gear is going bad! Even if it still turns it wont turn at the right ratio. My advive would be to go to pre-mix. I have an 85 150 xr2 and went to pre-mix. I have a bit more smoke when the motor is running, but I know the cylinders are getting the right amount of oil. I also have a spare motor I bought from a guy who's gear was stripped and he burned up two cylinders, these mid 80's 150 mercs have a history of stripping the internal gears on the oil pump. Good luck and let us know.
CU

------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!!!
