To PT&T or not on a small boat

My boat is just a 15' semi-vee jonboat and my question is this, Is PT&T really worth it for this type of boat? I realise it would be nice in shallow water but shallow water drive does the same purpose. But will it really allow a higher cruise speed on this type of boat? I'm thinking this boat will probably start to porpose before I get much trim.

I'm looking at buying a new/used 40-50hp tiller soon and I just can't decide if I need pt&t or if it would just be something extra to break down on me down the road.

Thanks for any input!

If it were me, I'd for sure get it. Easy to beach, can trim when running for best efficiency and if you ever decide to use remote controls, you will certainly want it. Wouldn't be with out it. Didn't have it on my 28 Johnson and it was a pain. Anything over 40 HP, I would definitly consider it.

Tilt and trim works better the older you get. nevjb

I have it on my 13' whaler (it is remote sterring though) and I wouldn't do without it. However, I'm having problems with the Merc Tilt/Trim bulky POS that I'm replacing it with the CMC PT-130. 6" setback and power tilt/trim at a lower cost to fix the POS Merc stuff I have now!

Jon Boater,

A 40 or 50 hp. engine is not that small. Once you have tilt and trim, you'll never go back to not having it.

It's worth every penny, and then some.

Wow I guess it would be a good idea to go for the pt&t.

Well let me rephrase the question, would it be better to go with a 2-stroke w/pt&t or a 4-stroke with gas assist  ? I haven't seen any 4-strokes I can afford w/pt&t and I really wanted one because of the quietness and the better design for trolling.

I guess I could add the bolt on type later down the road.

Jon Boater,

The gas assist is nowhere near like having T n T.

iboats has several used engines (tiller) with T n T.

Look here.

http://www.boatmotors.com/

I have the PT&T on a 40 Johnson '89 tiller & I have to admit it's nice. I had a 40 J. as a kid & I didn't mind yanking it up, but it's nice not hanging over the transom to raise it. It was repaired once & it's a little fussy about staying in place. I have figured out the "touch" so I don't care about fixing it again until it fails.

most 40 hp motors weigh over 200 pounds. Too heavy for me.

A CMC tilt and trim is an outstanding unit. I have one on my 40 Johnson on an 18 Gregor. The best parts are, being able to trim for the most speed and when coming up on a rocky shore, tilting it up out of harms way. No back strain. nevjb

Forget power assist. Once you have been spolied by pt&t, you will never consider anything less.
