I have a 175Hp OMC motor and i am trying to ski behind it and the hand throttle seems to be too responsive a slight movement and i would either be going to fast or to slow is there a fix to this

c,

I've pulled many a skier. We all tend to be a bit "ham handed" when it comes to "hit it".

I've found that a gentle touch on throttle is much more pleasing to the skier. When they say "hit it", DO NOT give it full throttle.

Ease into it and provide max. power once they are on top of the water. Otherwise you just tend to pull the rope out of their hands. With 150+ ponies, that's easy to do!

Good point Djohns.I've found if You don't use the top handle of the throttle lever but rather choke your grip down on it a bit will keep from shoving it past the point that you are trying to control.I like to throttle into a pull with the lever arm between my thumb and index finger after I've shifted into gear.

ob,

Outstanding point! I think that's what many of us do. You just put it into words that escaped me.

Thanks!

c9908928,
Don't know if this applies to your situation, but you may want to apply some more friction on the control handle by tightening the friction nut on the control lever, so you will have better control of the lever. Just a thought!

c9908928

This is not the kind of problem we are used to dealing with. I am very confused!!!

Try pulling off a couple of spark plugs wires!!! LOL.

Best Regards to all, Happy New Year

Gold Bear ;)

Re: To responsive

C990-
Not to be argumentative, but I would suggest adjusting your throttle friction control as well. Here comes the "but" part. Rick suggested tightening your throttle tension nut to increase friction, and that will work if you experiencing a throttle that is so loose that you can't control it from going to far forward. But I have always found it easier to control something precisely when you use a little force verses a lot of pressure. I would recommend loosening the friction setting which will allow you to freely shift forward in throttle w/o needing that strong push that ends up over-throttling. The real solution depends on what your specific controls feels like as to whether rick's or my advice will work best. I Also agree with OB about lowering hand down on throttle as it gives you a wrist support to help control the force/length of throttle push. Oh, and dont forget to lube throttle linkages and check for any binding that could cause the cable/linkage to catch and then surge forward during constant throttle application. Good Luck :D

Re: To responsive

The problem is a small amount of movement in the throttle handle gives a large amount of speed variation on the plane or off, how can i get around this problem

Re: To responsive

Another possibility - C99 - Could you tell us what kind of boat you have that 150 hanging on? Also what is the rpm at WOT?

If you are way under proped you will have instant acceleration - great hole shot - but less top end than is available - very responsive.

Re: To responsive

It sounds to me like the throttle linkage and control unit are very reactive right where you need the outboard to be less responsive. Try adjusting the linkage and lubricating all the pivot points and losening the friction. You may want to check out an aftermarket control unit. I put one on my 40 hp Yamaha that has separate shift and throttle levers, rather than the integrated shift/throttle. Thus, the throttle lever has more movement capabilities. Rather than just having throttle control from the mid point of the control box forward (90 degrees), it has movement to about 150 degrees. It was a cheapo plastic thing, but works good.

Re: To responsive

If you've got a manual, look and see what it sez about synchronizing the throttle valves and adjusting the throttle pickup point.

c/6

Hooty

Also check to be sure the throttle and timing linkage is synchronized, (link and sync).

c/6

Hooty
