to shim or not to shim?

I'm replacing the gearset in my '86 omc upper. I'm not sure how to do it and I understand they need to be shimmed and stuff. Is this something I can do myself or would I be better off just paying a mechanic to do it? And if so, any idea how much they'd charge?

Thanks

Re: to shim or not to shim?

Well it's a safe bet to say you probbly don't have any of the special tools needed to properly shim the gears ,so unless you want to buy a spare gearset just in case take, it to a shop and do it right.
