To Thermostat, Or Not To Thermostat

Hello Everyone,

Happy Turkey Day!!!!!

Odd Question,

Should a thermostat be used in the waterneck of a late 70's 351W, that is raw, salt water cooled?

I can think of two arguments...

No, because it is a choking point for any kind of debris to possibally clog.

Yes, because the engine will operate better at normal, controlled temperatures.

Any advice?

Use the thermo, the cooling system is designed with it in mind, and parts of the engine can run too hot and other parts too cold without one. If you are worried about restrictions, the water intakes are a lot more restrictive than the open thermo. If you are in salt water replace them once a season, they get crudded up and start sticking after that, I can tell when my engine starts running too cool it's time to change it. I use OMC gasket sealer on the thermo housing bolts as per OMC and they come right out no worries.
