Are these the same or not the biggest reason is i am putting a tr-1 gold autopilot on it and it has a carb actuator for throttle control so the carb and mounting have to be the same for the tr-1 mounting bracket. Tr-1 says it will work on merc but no info on the Tohatsu

Both engines are built by Tohatsu and are essentially the same with one difference. The way the engine shifts. The Tohatsu original design has a shift lever mounted on the front of the engine. The Mercury label has the traditional Mercury shift-in-the-throttle-grip design. The Mercury shift is more convenient...Mercury offers a kit to convert it back to the Tohatsu method. The Tohatsu shift is more durable. Toss a coin as to what to get.

I would prefer the seperate shift so i dont have to touch the throttle the tr-1 will control that for me so i guess tohatsu for me

Plus you save a boat load of cash buying the Tohatsu.
