Tohatsu 140A2 - fitting a yamaha prop

Hi Guys

New to Iboats but been reading it for a long while.

I smashed my prop recently beyond economical repair (3 blade ally tohatsu - 13 1/4 x 17) anyway as i have been lazy and not done any WOT testing i thought i better do the testing before i invest in a new prop, we do a lot of ocean work so I fancy a 4 blader.

So that i could do this testing (now i have trashed the original) I bought a used prop from ebay (not much of a selection in oz) that i believe to be a yamaha version of the above prop and it was advertised as yamaha / tohatsu.

anyway... i have been trying to fit it to the motor, there was no thrust washer supplied so initially it went too far back. I can use the thrust washer from the original tohatsu, but this still doesnt move the prop forward enough to allow the nut and washer to clamp.

The other issue with using the thrust washer from the tohatsu prop is that there is nothing to locate it on the prop, and as the yamaha prop has a tube (to the rear of the spline) about 2mm bigger in dia than the spline, this means there is no rear support for the prop. The thrust washer located tightly on the tohatsu prop.

Have you guys got any advice as to a) what thrust washer i need or b) what do i need to use to get it to fit correctly.

Engine is off at the mo (lifting it and painting transom) but I have to get this back in the water as the trailer is meant to be being regalved shortly.. so need it sorting urgently!

Thanks

Steve

Welcome to Iboats,

E bay guys sometimes doesn't know what they sell. Don't think can match a Yam prop on a Tohatsu engine due to number of splines, shaft diam, prop lenght issues..

Happy Boating

Hi Sea rider

Thanks for the welcome.

The 140a is a 15 spline shaft, the same as the yammies. I think i have worked it out, as it needs a rear thrust washer / spacer from an M series prop. (even though its a k series prop)

With the M series bush it pushes the prop forward enough for the nut to hold and not too far that there is a gap between the gear housing and the prop. It sits about right.

Now my next issue. I have been loaned the bush, of part no 69J-45987-00 but this part is phenomonally expensive (twice the cost of the prop!) does anyone have the ability to cross reference the part with another cheaper part?

There are also parts numbered 6E5-45987-00-00 that look very similar plus many others with a 6XX-45987-XXX as a part number that looks the same.

Any ideas?

Steve
