I have a 1996 Tohatsu 3.5 two stroke basket case. Piecing together this 3.5 and have a timing issue. It does not have points, it the cdi type. When I pull the cord and it fires the cord hits a hard spot and the motor sputters, like its fighting itself. I can tell the timing is off which as far as I know there is no adjustment. I tried a different flywheel, checked the key way and also a different cdi, same result. I have seen this issue once before and never could figure it out. Next I plan to pull all the ignition parts off a running motor and put them all on this motor to see what happens. I have had this motor completely apart as It needed a new top bearing. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Because its a basket case made up of various components from other engines I wonder if I have a mis-matched set of ignition parts, I'm not aware there is any difference in all the related parts for cdi type ignition for these little kickers, I could be wrong.

Okay, problem solved, once I opened up the running motor I saw I had the ignition coil under the fly wheel mounted in backwards, all is good now.
