K, big day for me, the boating newbie. I'll be getting this lil 15' fiberglass scooter on Folsom Lake tomorrow.

After makin the seats, getting the electrical squared away, and getting the proper wiring harness for my truck and trailer, I'm more than ready to put it on the water.

I've heard some talk about trailering, and what vehicles are appropriate for what boats. I've pulled this boat around during a test drive with my S10 (4banger) and it seemed to do just fine. Any thoughts on this? The manual says the truck can pull up to 3000 lbs. I have yet to weigh the boat and trailer, but it seems to me it's likely far less heavy than that.

Anyhoo - I'll bring the digicam along and snap some picks of my maiden voyage. Here's to hopin' I dont screw it up!! :D

HI MIKEINSAC That is a nice rig!! How was the tow on hills?I had a little trouble with hills and RAMPS that were not PAVED but my SONOMA 2.8 litre truck is not 4 wheel drive. The ramps were tough. As for your maiden voyage ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKFULLY AND RESPECTFULLY BART (UNLANDLOCKED) SR.

Well.... it was an (overall) success. ;)

Bart: truck did ok on the ramp, thank goodness! Towed very well throughout.

I wrote up a relatively short narrative and dropped it (and some pics) on a webpage. Those curious can check it out here. (note: there are 8 pics about 40kb on average.)

Let's say it was "adventuresome" at a couple points! It appears as if the weather will soon be turning more winter-like, but I'm praying for a sunny, no wind day for next weekend!

Thanks for the kind remarks and the information you guys here have offered. I know where I'll always go online for people who love boating and who know their stuff! :D

Which side of the lake did you launch on? Granite Bay or Brown Ravine? Is the water level down to stage 1 yet and was there a long wait to get out of the water?

Congrats Mike she looks great! I know what you mean about 15' boats in choppy water. When you have that flat day, you will be thrilled with the ride and the increase in speed. What is your HP?
I have a 15' Silverline 65HP Evinrude.

Thanks for the pics. They really bring back memories. I used to live in Sac and boat on Folsom Lake every week-end. Some years would be tough because of water levels though. I live in Florida now and don't have to worry about that. Try that lake up by Oroville--awesome scenery. Thanks again for the memories! :D

Re: Tomorrow's Launch!

Boatist: we launched from Granite Bay, but next time we're going to try Browns Ravine, I think. We cruised by there and it seemed a little more permanent than the makeshift, dusty dry lakebottom they had going on at Granite Bay. As far as stages, I'm not sure. Getting out wasn't too bad... we hung around maybe 10 minutes or so. The wind and waves kept all the water skiers away: there wasn't a single water skier on the lake. There were two floaty pullers braving the waves out by the dam, tho.

Capt.Bob: I'm praying for a flat day before the season is out! The time I spent in the relatively calmer area around the dam was just a blast! The engine is a Mercury 1000, a 100hp old workhorse, probably from the late '60's if I had to guess, tho I'm not sure.

surftrish: I'll be sure to post more, including some of the dam, from the next time I go out. You moved to Florida? Do you get the humidity the rest of the southeast gets? I don't know if I could make that change! :D Glad you enjoyed the pics. And I'm going to look up the lake(s) around Oriville... as long as I dont have to make sustained hill climbs, I will likely check 'em out! I dont wanna abuse my lil 4 cyl truck :)

Re: Tomorrow's Launch!

Ya did a really nice job getting your boat sea worthy again...it looks very sharp.

Just by looking...I believe your Merc is a 1964 or 1965 model. Merc kicked up to 110 hp in '66 & '67...don't think they produced a 100 hp for those two years. 100 hp was brought back in'68 &'69 although top hp was 125 and all models had cowling stripes that were candy apple red.

Again...nice job!

Walt
