Just purchased a TOMOS 4.0 from a gentleman who bought it new in 1988 and for one reason or another never used it. It has literally never been started however, as we prepped it to start we realized that their was no gear selctor installed from the factory. It is completely missing. I know they are out of buisness on the outboard side but I was able to send a request to an outfit in Germany who have some replacement parts, still no reply. Any idea if anyone would have one stateside or if any other model might work on it? It appears to be in forward but we have no means to get it to neutral or reverse and we were even afraid to try an start it in forward. Any help would be greatly appreciated, THanks !

Re: TOMOS Gear Selector

Just had a look at the Ailsa Craig Tomos 4hp parts book and can not see any gear or clutch.
parts are hard to get hold of in the uk.

Re: TOMOS Gear Selector

Keith,

Thankks for the reply. Are you saying the gear selctors on the boats you listed will work on my Tomos 4.0 ?

Re: TOMOS Gear Selector

Part II, or are you saying , it is not supposed to have a gear selector ? The little manual that came with it shows one and recommends you start it in neutral. The casing even has casting marks where forward and reverse are supposed to be..... If I do find one, it is going to be a bear to install ? Do you think it possible to fabricate one ? I just wish I knew what it looked like...

Re: TOMOS Gear Selector

The old Tomos 4 horse had no gears. If I remember rightly, 4.5 had a neutral only.

I don't know about the later models, but if it has just lost its gear change lever, it may be worth a try at making one as it would be very doubtful that you would find one.

Re: TOMOS Gear Selector

Hello from Slovenia :)

I know Tomos outboards quite well (they used to make them in my home city - Koper). I also own a TOMOS 4. This Outboard has no gears and, as you noticed - is always in forward. The models 4,5 and 4,8 had gears. Probably it is possible to install the gears if you find a srcrap 4,5... however I'm not sure it's worth it. :)

Tomorrow I'm going to their shop since I need something for my good old 4:) I'll ask if anything could be done about your issue :)

Regards

Marko.

Re: TOMOS Gear Selector

Mark,

Thanks so much !!!! We actually figured it out the other day. It has a centrifugal clutch. WE thought that originally but were told differerent because when you held the prop and pulled the rope it still turned the prop so wqe ruled it out. Then we ried it in water. Works perfectly and, get this, it started on the second pull after never being started since it was made in 1988. Runs like a top ! Thanks again for the help.

Re: TOMOS Gear Selector

Effland,

Glad to hear that everything is OK :) In my opinion, TOMOS outboards (especially small ones) are very good engines... simple and quite easy to repair.

I found on the net the scheme of the parts for the "4" series... it has even english texts :)

http://www.jurec.hr/pdf/shema_tomos_t3_8_4_8.pdf

Maybe it will come handy in the future.

As I read in the forum, the main problems that you guys have is with spare parts... it is quite difficult to find them even here in Slovenia... but surprisingly, our neighbours (Croatia) have plenty of them... so it is possible to find virtually every spare part :)

I hope your little "4" will serve you well!

Regards
