My grandma had a marble bust of a dutch girl that I simply adored from my earliest memories of Grandmas house.
I was not allowed to touch her. She was, Grandma said, too beautiful to touch. Admiring her was okay, but to touch her was to trespass where I was not welcome.
The rest of my life, up to today, Elizabeth Taylor occupied that, "admire, but too beautiful to touch" place in my mind. She was beautiful beyond breathtaking and talented far beyond most people's appreciation, but she was too beautiful to touch.
Thank you, Elizabeth, for the dreams and fantasies, and may you finally rest in peace.
