What does it mean when you overfill the lower end of an engine and the fill level plug wasn't taken out?:
The gear oil started coming out of one of the drain holes in the next upper chamber.

Hello Booeddie.

Can you explain a bit more. I take it that lower end of the engine is the gearbox. And to over fill it would be very hard as most are sealed units. What model and make is this engine...???

Cheers

Always take out ALL drain/fill/vent screws. If you don't you can blow the seals and maybe even the damage the gears inside.

1971 45 hp Chrysler
The vent plug was open but the level indicator plug was in tight.
As the gear oil was being installed it was leaking out

Please indicate what you are saying from this attachment or please attach what you are saying. ?The vent plug was open but the level indicator plug was in tight?. I hope you did not pull the wrong screw in the center that was my un-marked screw before the fading. I need to cover the center screw with silicone as a reminder to not touch. jow

first of all, what motor do you have? next: i'm unaware of any w a level indicator but their could be a model w it. last: if gear oil came out of a weep hole, that's a problem w your seals at the least. the outdrive is a cased in unit w/ the impeller n pump housing above it.

and we're assuming you didn't take the unmarked screw out. that holds your gears in place.

I've got a feeling, wick, that it was one of those "uh-oh" moments. He may not come back.

Not wanting one of those "uh-oh" moments, so today while working on lower unit I put some silicone on that "no touch" screw and smoothed it over so I don't get in a hurry some time and take the wrong screw out. Factory should have used a torx screw or something different for that screw.
