Too much HP?

After having posed the question about a year ago on this forum of "why am I getting wet from side spay". I was told that I needed a bigger motor. Now I am ready to buy a used one but wonder, is a 40 HP too big for a 14' boat that lists 25 HP as max on data plate? Seems I see many boats no bigger than mine with much larger than 25 HP motors. What ramifications could this pose. I'm talking common sense use of power. The boat currently has a 10 HP johnson on it. It is a shallow v boat flat at transom, fiberglass. Quite a heavy boat. Thanks for looking. Aaron :)

Ayuh,... Sounds excessive to me,... Post a picture of the boat...

If the plate says 25 and you exceed that not only can you have insurance problems but could be liable in court if you have an altercation.
My insurance co wants to know what is the rating and what is on it. Also a smart@@@ lawyer would nail you for something.

When a boat is rated for MAX HP it is declaring that more than the rated HP is unsafe. Stick to the maker's recommendations.

Dont buy the 40 just because it is there. Do it right and find a 25.

Other boats are rated higher if they have a different design. For example, a console steering wheel gets you a higher rating than tiller

Uhhh... You sure it was THIS forum? You have 2 posts. This one, and an unanswered one asking about a Chrysler 9.9....

Regardless, stick to the capacity plate. 25 HP is what the boat can safely handle for power in all conditions. Be patient, and I'm sure you will find the right motor.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be looking for a 25. Aaron
